Publication and author counts by area
These counts describe Arkansas research output in 2021–2025. They come from the audited OpenAlex cohort of articles and reviews behind the plan's publication figures: 24,743 works with at least one retained Arkansas institutional affiliation, after 126 false or unresolved records were removed.
How the counts are made
A paper belongs to an area when its OpenAlex primary subfield is on that area's list. Areas that share no subfields do not overlap, and the application rows are subsets of their growth areas. Paper counts match the published recent-window and subfield counts exactly.
An author is counted once per area. A distinct Arkansas author is an OpenAlex author record that, on at least one of the area's papers, lists an institution in that paper's retained Arkansas set. The authorships come from the same OpenAlex work records the geography audit reviewed, retrieved in October 2026. OpenAlex sometimes splits one person across two author records, so these counts can run slightly high.
A paper counts toward the Division of Agriculture column when an Arkansas author's affiliation names the University of Arkansas System Division of Agriculture, an Agricultural Experiment Station, the Cooperative Extension Service, a research and extension center, a research station or the Center of Excellence for Poultry Science. Many Division researchers list only the Fayetteville campus, so this column is a floor.
The work-level records reproduce every area count exactly. Their all-fields total is 24,740, three fewer than the published 24,743, so the all-fields author count covers those 24,740 works. Infectious diseases is left out of the subfield rows because its work-level count (335) differs by one from the published subfield count (336).
Topic counts use the OpenAlex primary topic name: 309 retained works have a water, hydrology or irrigation topic, and 98 have an explicit quantum topic.
